Solving CPAP Problems with Sleep Apnea Dentistry

Sleep apnea’s traditional treatment through CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure, can be tough for some patients to handle. While CPAP does indeed keep airways open and allows patients to breathe freely, it does this through a mask that is attached to a patient’s head and forces flow of air through the nose and mouth. Common side effects of utilizing CPAP masks are dry mouth and difficulty falling asleep. The most troubling side effect, though, is that patients who cannot tolerate CPAP simply do not wear it.

Dr. Azuma provides a more comfortable way to treat sleep apnea through oral appliance therapy. These dental appliances are made to hold jaw arches in a specific position so that soft tissue at the back of the throat does not cover airways and prevent nighttime breathing. These mouth guards are small, portable, and improve patient compliance so that sleep apnea sufferers actually benefit from effective therapy.

Sleep Apnea Therapy with Dental Lasers

At Dr. Azuma’s dental office, our Honolulu sleep apnea treatments are innovative, gentle, and non-invasive. In addition to offering oral appliances to help patients breathe more easily, Dr. Azuma also utilizes laser dental technology, including:couple in bed - man snoring, angry woman covering ears with pillow

NightLase® NightLase- While lax tissue at the back of the throat can stand in the way of free airflow, application of the NightLase laser gently heats tissue on the inside of the mouth, tightening and firming, so soft tissues are less likely to collapse over air passageways. The effects of this treatment are long-lasting and provide a CPAP alternative that can be coupled with sleep apnea dental appliances as well, for comprehensive care.

SmoothLase® - Produced by the same company that created NightLase®, SmoothLase® is another laser dentistry approach to sleep apnea care that encourages the body’s natural healing response to tighten and tone muscle. While this is common for outward, aesthetic procedures in smoothing skin, the process is also effective at lifting soft tissue at the back of the mouth to alleviate obstructive sleep apnea.

If you’re having trouble working with your CPAP machine and are looking for a more comfortable alternative to getting a good night’s rest, Dr. Azuma and his team offer a number of ways to achieve results.
